Why does xtrema 3rd party test all of our products?

At Xtrema Cookware, we understand that you want the best for yourself and your family. That's why we've partnered with third-party labs to test all our products for substances like lead and cadmium. The results? An independent report from specialists with no vested interest in the test outcome that shows completely non-biased results. When you buy our ceramic cookware, you can have confidence knowing that your products are safe to use and free of toxicants, as required by California Prop 65.

leach testing performed on all xtrema products

Leach testing is a procedure that exposes our products to acidic liquids and solvents to ensure harmful toxicants do not enter the environment or your food. We use an internationally recognized standard for this testing. By taking these steps, we ensure your Xtrema product has undergone comprehensive ceramic product testing from surface to core.

what is california prop 65?

California Prop 65 is a law that requires businesses to notify customers of any products that may expose them to chemicals known to cause cancer, congenital disabilities or reproductive harm. These chemicals include lead, cadmium, arsenic, benzene and mercury.

At Xtrema, we use the latest technology to ensure we meet and exceed the standards set by California Prop 65. Following these guidelines allows us to offer the best possible products for your home and health.

have questions?

Our products are not made with lead or other heavy metals. These materials are not ingredients in our recipe. When sourcing materials from the earth, there is the possibility that they contain trace amounts of heavy metals, so we test all shipments for extractable cadmium and lead in accordance with California Prop 65. Xtrema has passed California Prop 65 lead and cadmium leaching standards for the past 15 years. We want you to know that using our products will not expose you to lead in unsafe amounts. We post all of our test results on our website so that you can feel safe knowing your home cookware will not expose you to harmful toxicants.

LFGB is a set of regulations that apply to food products and their packaging in Germany and the European Union. These regulations aim to ensure that all foods, drinks, cosmetics and other daily necessities are free from toxic chemical substances. The difference between these two laws is their scope — LFGB covers European products, while California Prop 65 only applies to products sold in California.

SGS is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. We believe in their mission of helping companies exceed health and safety standards, so we have partnered with them to ensure that our products comply with applicable regulations.

Our quality assurance process begins with in-depth testing by one of the world's leading laboratories, SGS. Here our products are independently tested in accordance with LFBG standards. With our products, you can rest assured that you'll receive a safe product that meets the highest quality, safety and performance criteria.

Third-party testing verifies that your product is safe with complete transparency and verifies the results come from an unbiased source. This testing helps you know what substances exist in your product and what substances the consumer can be exposed to. Xtrema Cookware is not involved with the testing process at all, so you can fully trust the results.

XRF testing cannot tell the consumer how much of a given substance leaches (comes out) from a product or how much a consumer can be exposed to under normal use. Only Third Party leach testing can provide the consumer with these results. X-ray fluorescence, or XRF, testing is a technique used to identify the elemental composition of a material. This method can detect the presence of lead and has many valuable applications. However, the XRF testing method does not measure potential exposure to certain elements, making it less ideal for testing cookware. Leach testing allows the consumer to know how much a given substance can be extracted from a product under normal use. If a substance cannot be extracted from a product, then it cannot negatively affect the consumer. At-home lead swab tests are less effective, as they only measure the concentration of lead in the top layers of paint and do not consider the possibility of lead-contaminated dust or other contamination sources. These tests can lead to false positives and unreliable results that do not accurately reflect potential hazards.

Xtrema Pure Ceramic Cookware is made of 100% natural minerals, clay and water. It is fired in a Natural Gas Fired Kiln at over 2,000 degrees.

One of our customers sent used product to an independent third party lab to be tested after years of use. The testing shows that even after years of use our product passed California Prop 65 standards for lead and cadmium leaching.

An independent third party lab has the unglazed clay substrate of our products. This test results can be view here. They show that the clay substrate passed California prop 65 standards for lead and cadmium leaching.

The black color is created from the various minerals and oxides that we use. When they are combined with being high fired they react with each other and then they produce the black color on the outside of our products. Different minerals and oxides will naturally have different properties and colors. A beautiful and unique part of ceramics is combining these natural materials in the right ratios in order to produce certain aesthetic and certain physical feature(s).

Our clay substrate is placed in to high pressure casting molds and then high fired in a kiln. It is then glazed and refried in a kiln to produce the black glossy exterior. The substrate is mostly clay with some other ceramic materials, minerals, and oxides mixed in. The glaze is mostly silica (sand, quartz) based with other minerals and oxides mixed in.  The combinations of these materials along with the firing temperature/timing is what makes the black glossy finish. The ceramic surface that is produced is harder than metal which is why it is non-scratch.All of the materials become permanently bonded to each other through firing. Glazes/glasses if well composed and fired are an amorphous solid. Glaze systems are designed because of their inherent stability. Glaze creation is fairly simple chemistry, where we convert minerals into a glass and all of the materials are contributing to the inherent chemistry of the glass. So any molecules or materials in the composition, stay in the final material. This is very different than modern "ceramic" coatings which are low temp fired and do not become permanently bonded to the surface.

During the product development phase of our cookware we set out with the intention to make our cookware in the United States. With quality as our top priority we found that the quality and innovation coming from our factory in China was much higher than samples that were made in the United States. With over 20+ years of relationships, better access to ceramic materials, a higher quality product, and a 10,000 year history of making ceramics we chose to have our cookware made in China.
